What is UPSC?

The Civil Services Examination (CSE) is a nationwide competitive examination in India conducted by the Union Public Service Commission for recruitment to various Civil Services of the Government of India.

Structure: Preliminary Exam (Prelims) → Main Exam (Mains) → Personality Test (Interview)

Exam Structure

Preliminary Exam (Objective)

  • General Studies Paper I (GS) - 200 marks, merit-based
  • Civil Services Aptitude Test (CSAT) - 200 marks, qualifying (33%)

Main Exam (Written & Descriptive)

  • Total of 9 papers, including two qualifying language papers.
  • Essay, 4 General Studies papers, and 2 Optional Subject papers are counted for merit.
  • Total Marks for Merit: 1750

Personality Test (Interview)

A face-to-face interview with the UPSC board. (275 marks)
