What is the CSS Exam?
The CSS (Central Superior Services) Competitive Examination is held annually by FPSC to recruit officers for Occupational Groups and Services (OG&S). It is a multi-stage process: written examination, psychological assessment and viva voce (interview).
Eligibility Criteria
Candidates must hold a Bachelor's degree (minimum second division) from an HEC-recognized institution, be between 21–30 years of age (with relaxation for government servants), and be a Pakistani national. The age limit is 21–30 years for general candidates.
CSS Examination Structure
The CSS written exam consists of compulsory subjects (800 marks) and optional subjects (600 marks). Compulsory papers include English Essay, English (Precis & Composition), General Science & Ability, Current Affairs, Pakistan Affairs, Islamiat (for Muslims) or Comparative Study of Major Religions (for Non-Muslims), and every candidate must score the minimum threshold in each compulsory paper.
CSS Optional Subjects
Candidates choose 6 optional subjects from various groups (Group I–VIII) worth 600 marks total. Popular optional choices include Political Science, International Relations, Public Administration, Economics, History, Sociology, Psychology, Law, and subject-specific choices matching the candidate's academic background. Each optional paper is 100 marks / 3 hours.
CSS MPT Screening Test
From 2022, FPSC introduced the Multiple Paper Testing (MPT) screening test before the main written exam. It consists of MCQs covering English, everyday science, current affairs, Pakistan Affairs and Islamic Studies/Comparative Religion. Only candidates who clear the MPT cutoff proceed to the main written exam.
Preparation Strategy
A structured 1–2 year preparation plan works best for CSS. Start with the syllabus, select optional subjects based on your academic background, build English writing skills, maintain a current affairs diary, and practice MCQs daily. Give past papers the same priority as reading. Divide your time: 40% compulsory subjects, 40% optional subjects, 20% essay and precis writing.

CSS Salary, Grade & Pay Scale
Successful candidates who clear the written exam, psychological test, and viva voce are allocated to one of the 12 occupational groups in Basic Pay Scale 17 (BPS-17). CSS officers enjoy competitive basic pay, government accommodation or house rent allowance, free medical facility, utility subsidies, and transport allowances depending on their group allocation.
Interview & Viva Voce Guidance
The CSS interview (viva voce) carries 300 marks, with a minimum passing requirement of 100 marks.
